K-8th

Our renowned K-8 program is transformative for our students’ intellectual, emotional, and personal journeys.

Educating the whole child

At HTS, we understand the K-8 years are pivotal for students’ growth in academics, confidence, and character. Our dynamic classrooms and hands-on projects—like coding with MIT App Inventor or growing their own garden—make learning exciting and enjoyable.

Our WASC-accredited program provides a balanced education that nurtures academic excellence, emotional resilience, and personal development. Our dedicated teachers make learning engaging and interactive, fostering both creativity and intellectual curiosity.

We prepare students for high school and beyond, equipping them with strong academic skills and the character to build meaningful relationships. In a world where challenges like bullying and record loneliness are prevalent, our holistic approach lays a strong foundation for a bright future.

We are grateful that HTS provided an academically excellent, safe, fun, and inspirational environment for our girls from preschool through 8th and 6th grade.

One of my daughters is finishing her senior year at the University of San Francisco and the other daughter is entering senior year at Hillsdale High School. Both of them are thriving academically and socially.

Monica W., HTS Parent

An individualized approach to education

At HTS, we prioritize getting to know each student personally while they master their common core-aligned curriculum. Our small class sizes allow teachers to give individual attention to each student and foster their intellectual, emotional, and personal growth. Through ongoing collaboration and dialogue among teachers, we tailor our approach to the unique strengths and interests each student brings to the class.

Our project-based learning (PBL) approach enables teachers to involve the unique interests and strengths of each student in their curriculum.

Some examples of PBL include HTS middle school students having their understanding strengthened of ratios and fractions by developing their own cookbook and learning to code by developing assistive communication apps for classmates who are nonverbal.

We use a universal design for learning (UDL) teaching method, which is a way of teaching that helps all students learn better by providing them with different options for how they can access, interact with, and express their understanding of the content. UDL also removes any barriers that might prevent students from learning, such as the way the goals, assessments, methods, or materials are designed.

By using UDL, we create an inclusive and equitable learning environment for everyone. We’ve seen students thrive in this space. We look for ways to spark each student’s unique love for learning.

HTS believes in the power of technology to help each student reach their full potential. Students are exposed to the boundless possibilities of technology through our STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) curriculum.

Our Cre8, Makerspace, and Genius Hours give our students access to materials and resources that build their technology skills and knowledge. For more information on this, see our technology curriculum below.

Social-emotional learning
At HTS, we provide a stable and nurturing environment where students can discover their passions, respect diverse perspectives, and build confidence. Our staff is trained in social-emotional learning (SEL) and embeds social skills into their curriculum. Students are taught to have a growth mindset, use mindfulness skills, engage in flexible and social thinking and more.

Husky Habits
Our eighth-grade students participate in a class called “Husky Habits” to prepare for high school. Students learn how to reflect, set goals, and be aware of their surroundings and classmates. They also learn executive functioning and organizational skills that help them become successful high school students.

Full-inclusion of neurodiverse learners
HTS students are also given opportunities to learn from and with peers who are different from them. This cultivates in each student a deeper sense of community and respect for others, leading to higher resilience and prevention of declined mental health as children enter adolescence. Our HTS graduates have gone on to become advocates for inclusion and diversity in their high schools, colleges, and workplaces.

My HTS experience has helped me a ton in my friendships and social skills. I’ve learned how to talk to people from completely different backgrounds and upbringings. I’ve learned how to learn, not only for myself, but also how to help other people learn as well.

Cameron B., HTS Class of 2022

A highly trained and innovative staff

Our teachers are dedicated to growing in their expertise and providing the best possible education to their students.

Additional certifications

Our teachers often attend seminars, workshops, and conferences to learn new ideas to implement into their classrooms. Different staff members are currently trained in the following programs:

Training by on-site special services

Teachers are able to refer to our on-site therapy team to learn how to make their curriculum accessible to diverse learners.

Collaborative approach

Since each year builds on the last, teachers often collaborate to make sure their students are set up for success in everything they do. We also work with families at home to best adapt to the needs of each student. Each parent has at least one parent-teacher conference in the first semester and can schedule meetings as needed throughout the school year.

Creating a safe space

To cultivate a classroom built on respect and understanding of one another’s needs and differences, our staff takes great care and attention in creating a safe space for students that is devoid of peer pressure and bullying, so that students can freely learn and grow.

Curriculum at a glance

Our K-8 classes are Common Core aligned and certified to meet state educational standards and designed to build upon the skills and topics learned in prior years. At each stage in their educational journey, we aim to inspire in students a love for learning, nurture their curiosity, and help them express their ideas with clarity.

In kindergarten, students will build a strong foundation through engaging stories that spark a love for reading, essential math skills, and exciting science lessons on seasons and nature. Social studies will introduce them to symbols, geography, and history.

First grade builds on students’ kindergarten foundation with a focus on deeper literacy and grammar skills through engaging texts and group discussions. In math, we expand on operations and algebraic thinking, explore place value, measurement, and data, and continue with shape recognition.

In second grade, we deepen comprehension through storytelling, theme identification, and illustration analysis. Our writing curriculum focuses on crafting opinion pieces, informative texts, and narratives with proper grammar. Students develop their expressive skills through group discussions.

In math, we cover place value, addition and subtraction, measurement, and more. Our science lessons explore plant growth, habitats, and biodiversity, while social studies introduces family history, North American geography, government basics, and trade concepts.

In third grade, we deepen reading comprehension by exploring story elements and perspectives. Students undertake research projects to build knowledge and enhance their writing skills.

In math, we tackle geometry, algebra, and problem-solving with multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. We also cover rounding, fractions, and measurement, including time and data interpretation.

In fourth grade, we build on foundational skills with a focus on advanced math and language arts. Students summarize texts, analyze themes, and explore different viewpoints. Writing skills are refined through research projects, emphasizing organization and revision.

Math instruction includes lines, angles, shape properties, multi-digit place value, fractions, decimals, and unit conversion.

In fifth grade, students analyze texts by quoting accurately, summarizing themes, and exploring different perspectives. Their writing skills are honed through planning, revising, and research, complemented by collaborative discussions.

Math instruction covers graphing, two-dimensional shapes, numerical expressions, decimals, fractions, and measurement. In U.S. History, students explore early American history, from native peoples to the Civil War. Science lessons follow NGSS standards, focusing on matter, ecosystems, Earth’s systems, and the solar system.

In middle school at HTS, students enhance reading comprehension through diverse texts and multiple novels, sharpening critical thinking and writing skills. They tackle algebraic problems, numerical expressions, ratios, and percents.

Our earth science curriculum explores water, energy, weather, and human impact. Students study ancient history while staying engaged with current events through speeches and our build-a-society unit.

Enhancing learning with technology

We believe technology is key to unlocking our students’ full potential. Each student receives a Chromebook for accessing educational websites and we integrate tech literacy throughout our curriculum in a variety of ways:

  • Minecraft for creating visual worlds for story-telling in English class.
  • Tablets for nonverbal students to communicate
  • Crea8 elective class and Makerspace to learn coding languages, robotics, and 3D printing
  • Block coding using Mit Scratch, Microsoft Makecode, and Tinkercad for 3D modeling and printing
  • Robotics including drones and Lego motors and robots
  • Micro:Bit boards
  • Android apps
  • Simple video game design
  • Research projects using Epic for younger grades
