Well, we are back at it, the new school year has just begun and after we managed to wipe our tears (for those kindergarten parents) or did our happy dance (for those parents of high schoolers) as we sent our kids off, we can’t help but feel a little bit out of place from those weeks off our regular school routine. These 5 tips should help ease the transition back into a great school year:
1. Set a schedule
- Having a set routine that you can talk through with your child will ease transitions. Oftentimes kids with and without special needs benefit from reminders or timers to get them from one task to another. Add visuals as well to help with the process. When they know the plan, a lot of anxiety can be relieved.
2. Meet your child’s teachers
- Most children actually do better when parents have built a relationship with their teacher. The easiest way to connect can be at student drop off or pick up at your school. And for students at HTS, parents should attend Back to School Night on September 20th for a meet and greet with teachers and staff.
3. Plan family meals
- Studies have found that students who eat more consistent meals with their parents show an increased performance in school and positive behavior overall. (https://www.ectutoring.com/resources/articles/family-dinners-improve-students-grades)
- Every summer HTS offers a cooking class that teaches students in middle and high school to create snacks and cook meals on their own.
4. Get outside
- We still have some wonderful weather being in the Bay Area so it’s important for growing students to take many opportunities to get outside. They are usually sitting for longer periods of time with a new school schedule, so to keep their bodies active, play a game of catch, soccer, hoops, or a walk aroundyour neighborhood.
- At HTS we offer cross-country in the fall, basketball in the winter, as well as track and volleyball in the spring. 4. Read together
